aghree ako kay UP Lakan. Our BPO industry is booming, well and good. pero sana masilayan ko rin ang araw na PINOY ang nagtatayo at nagmamay-ari ng mga BPO companies. sana may plano rin ang ating mga susunod na pinuno para maisakatuparan to

The reason the call center industry is booming here in our country is that we offer cheap labor. if our workers demanded higher wages, then the multi national companies who invest in the philippines for their back office support system, would choose to funnel their money to other countries instead. i still believe that the workers of the call center industry are entitled to higher compensation. however, the need to remain competitive especially against bpo hubs like india need to be taken into consideration.

UP Lakan, siguro hand-in-hand with encouraging a spirit of entrepreneurship, from a practical perspective, kailangan din natin ng source of capital. And working in a call center is as good a source as any. One day at a time, ika nga.

@christian it is unfair that callcenter agents here are being paid much much much much much much much much less than their counterparts in other countries. but then again, that's also precisely the reason why there are call centers here. otherwise, they'd all just be in the States where unemployment is also not exactly low. and if our rates aren't competitive, the companies will just farm out their call center services to India or China where labor can be had on the cheap. Cheaper even than here.

The best that can be done, to my mind, is for call center agents, regardless if they're college graduates to slug it out for a few years, save up, and plan a future to invest in. Either go into further studies while you're employed in the call center (I have a number of friends who became lawyers that way) or think of a sound business plan with relatively low capital requirements. And manage your time and money well. Although you may work odd hours, you won't be working long hours. So instead of blowing all your money enjoying and drinking, try to save some up so you can get out of your dead-end job (no offense to call center agents. I'm actually a fan of the relatively higher entry level pay.)

for college graduates, don't they get short changed if they get employed in call centers, i mean, there are lots of job out there that entail more "mental" capacity. i'm not downplaying the role of the bpo industry. but there seems to be a negative connotation about call centers.

Hi AnnieO. I'm a call center agent.

To those who don't know, BPO stands for business process outsourcing which essentially entails the farming out or contracting out of certain parts or phases of a step or steps in a business process.

A call center is one example. Usually with call centers, after sales customer support is what's contracted out by the companies. Although there are those that "push" for sales. But BPO's aren't limited to call centers. Virtually any part of the business process can be outsourced.

I don't know the specifics of other BPO industries, pero sa call centers:

Pro's: the educational requirement isn't as stringent as other jobs. And you grow because it involves a lot of interaction with people.

Con's: nakakasawa rin minsan. pero sa taong kumakayod at pamilyado, it's a decent source of steady income. mataas yung initial na sweldo, pero hindi ganun kabilis umangat. relatively flat kasi yung organization. team member to team lead to manager is as far as most people go in 8 to 10 years as far as I know.
